Triumvirate of Fun

This past weekend was a perfect storm of a good time. It didn't start out that way though. Friday at about noon I left work early as I was feeling nauseous and was running a fever. I was hungry, but everything I even thought about eating made me feel like I was going to throw-up. By about 4 though I was feeling fine.

Late Saturday morning I played my regular City of Heroes game with my brother and friends. Then I got the call to play poker Saturday night. Of course I went. I brought the beer, and my friend Stephanie made some pho. Nicole baked cookies. A nice pre-Chinese New Year's celebration. One guy went to a party, came and played poker for a while, and then went back to his party (I think the girls finally showed up). After we got done I spent the night there.

Why? Because the next day I was going to the Dallas Comic-con. My friend's house was closer to the con than my place. I also got to play with their son for a couple of hours before I left, which was fun.

Going one day was fine with me. I didn't bring my camera (or I did but no batteries), but I did meet the likes of Bernie Wrightson, Howard Chaykin, and Herb Trimpe. Which was cool. I talked to some dealers and local creators I know. The top topic being the cancellation of Wizard World Texas. (Slight tangent one day pass to Dallas Comic-con: $10.00 Wizard World Texas: $28.00. Are you kidding me!?) I bought a slew of Weird War Tales, a bunch of half-price trades, other various odds and ends of comics. It was fun, and three hours there was a perfect amount of time to be there. No sketches this time though.

A good, fun, responsibilty free weekend.

Faxless Payday Advances

This weekend is almost upon us, so it is time to talk about last weekend (huh?). Anyways, last weekend I went to my friend Wendy's lake house near Gun Barrel City (I love that name). It is about an hour and half drive. I rode up there with my friend's Sam and Nicole. I was a bunch of fun. It has been way too long since I have been out on a lake. Went riding around the boat several time. I also got to pilot a wave runner for the first time. Seriously, I shouldn't be allowed to drive one of those things. Not that I am too crazy and drive like a maniac. I just get lost too easily on the water. After like 5 minutes I didn't have any idea where I was.

Highlights:

I had Sandra Bullock's house pointed out to me about 25 times.

I was told we were going to play poker over the weekend, and we did. Starting at 1:30AM

I have a hard time sleeping when I am not in my bed. I went to bed after 4AM, and I started waking up around 7:30. I finally got up at 9:30 and read for an hour and half. I figured 11 was as far as I would let them sleep in, so that is when I left my room and started milling around. Plus it was hard to go to sleep at first, because when you cled you eyes it felt like the rocking of the boat on the water.

I was impressed I had my own room

It was a little tense because her ex-boyfriend (also a friend of mine) was also staying on the same lake. We did go and see him for a bit. Out of all of the lakes in all of Texas...

I met one guy who only had one long. I liked him, and he had a good sense of humor about it. He goes by "Uno."

I was surprised at how many people either didn't know how to swim, or were very weak swimmers.

I became very good at refueling the wave runner.

Paddle boats are more trouble than they are worth. Very tiring.

Late Sunday morning or right around Noon, Wendy's family came over. A lot of her brothers and sisters and their kids. When they first started coming through the door I didn't think they would stop. I swear by the time we left there was 30-40 people in her family there. I didn't really plan on eating any of their grilled good, but then I caught a whiff the hot dogs on the grill. I walked over there and one...and then I had another one. The major problem there was the heat. Above a hundred during the day and no breeze to speak of. That just beats you down. We left mid-afternoon and stopped by Dairy Queen to get a blizzard on the way back, which was a perfect topper after being out in that heat. It was a ton of fun, and I would definitely go back again.

I knew it!!!!!

As I have mentioned before my dad is getting remarried. The wedding is going to take place in his backyard, and a couple of months ago he told me was going to build a deck for the ceremony. When he told me this I knew he would be calling at some point to help him on a weekend or two. He never did call, so I figured he was doing fine.

I was right. I just didn't think he would wait 2 weeks(!) before the wedding to call, and he is going to be out of town the weekend before. So, I cancel my plans for the weekend (not like I had anything big planned). When I get there he hasn't done much since I was there in April.

Day 1: I arrive at about 10:30AM and it is time to get to work. I help unroll more of the power cord, I move a piece of lumber. I can see why he needed an extra hand, I think to myself. Seemingly hearing my thoughts my dad says,"Don't worry I'll put you to work soon." And did he. I had to dig holes for the posts he was putting in. I dug 2 holes 20 inches each. The post hole digger was useless in the hard clay in this part of Texas. I used it a few times, and it looked like I got about a 1/2 a tablespoon of soil. Would did work pretty well was the garden claw. Still it really wore me out. On one hole there were large pieces of brick that had to be dug out. What they were doing there that deep I have no idea.

About midday I realized I didn't put any sunscreen on, uh-oh. We made one trip to Home Depot, and once we return my dad realized he forgot the most important item (a 4x4), and he never wrote it on his list. After lunch we go back and pick it. I also mixed concrete to fill the holes, which I had never done before. I had to leave at around 4:30. My neck burning up from the sun and I had two deep bruises on the palms of my hand from the garden claw.

Wearing sandals was also a bad idea.

When I got home I eventually, and decided to take a nap at around 8PM. I woke up at 10 grabbed some dinner and went back to bed at 11.

Playing Rock Band until 4:30AM the night before...another bad idea.

Day 2: First thing in the morning I go to the store and buy some sunscreen. More holes to dig today. Before the end of the day I will have dug 10 more holes. These only about 12 inches deep, but still 10. This time I had some gloves so there was less wear and tear on my hands. Another trip to Home Depot, and more supplies. We really slowed down around 2-3 o'clock the sun was beating down on us and there was no shade. Plus, my dad wasn't sure what he wanted to do next. Work finally devolved into what i thought it would. Me standing around watching my dad work. As he wasn't sure what he wanted to do next so couldn't give me any leads as to what to do. We picked up the pace around 4:30 when the sun started to going down and it cooled off. We quit finally at around 6:30.

Dad and his fiancee wanted to take me out to dinner, but I wanted the work I did for them to be its own reward. Furthermore, considering how tired I was at that point I just wanted to get home.

I don't know, waddya you wanna do?

This weekend I am taking care of my Dad's house and dogs while he and his fiancee are in San Antonio. Before I accepted this gig I should have realized how boring it was going to be. Since my Dad moved into his new house he no longer has cable. So no random sports to occupy me. Or any of the other things I could watch. I don't need pay channels, just basic cable would be fine.

I can use his computer, but it isn't mine with all of the stuff loaded on it that I like to do. I did grab a handful of CDs to listen to while I am on his computer, but I forgot my ipod for the other times...sigh. I am glad I brought plenty of things to read. Books, TPBs and such. That is one of the activities I really enjoy when I house sit for someone. I get to catch up a little bit on my reading.

Another point of contention for me is that I don't know this neighborhood that well, so I am not as familiar with places to grab a bite at that aren't fast food or chain joints. Not that I don't go to those places, its just I have them near me.

Bit I just know that I will be pretty bored...

Three Day Weekend

I get a three day weekend, this weekend because of Good Friday. Every time I get one of these things I think of all of errands, chores, and other stuff I am going to do with this extra day. I never, and I do mean never do any of them.
Clean the house? No.
Wash my truck? No.
Go the grocery store? No.
Laundry? Nope.
Yard work? Sounds like a lot of fun, but no thank you.
I usually just do what I do on two day weekends: sit around and relax.
Well, I think I am off to give the dog a bath.

Yeah, right...
